Where Hardwood Lumber Buyers and Mills Meet: Trade Conventions and Fairs in 2027 and 2028

The main hardwood lumber trade events for 2027 are the Indiana Hardwood Lumbermen’s Association convention (8 to 10 February, Indianapolis), the Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers annual meeting (3 to 7 March, Florida), LIGNA (10 to 14 May, Hannover), interzum (11 to 14 May, Cologne), the new IWF West (25 to 27 August, San Antonio) and the National Hardwood Lumber Association convention (21 to 23 September, Cherokee, North Carolina). For 2028 the organisers have so far announced Carrefour International du Bois (30 May to 1 June, Nantes) and the NHLA convention (6 to 8 September, Nashville). Dates and venues below are as listed by each organiser on 25 October 2026. Confirm them before you book travel, because organisers change them.

Two kinds of event sit in this list. The lumber association events are built around sawmills, yards and the buyers who deal with them. The fairs are broader: they serve furniture and joinery makers and show machinery, components and materials, with lumber as one part. Which kind suits you depends on whether you want to talk to a mill or to see what your own industry is buying.

Lumber association events in the United States

NHLA Annual Convention and Exhibit Showcase. NHLA lists Cherokee, North Carolina for 21 to 23 September 2027 and Nashville, Tennessee for 6 to 8 September 2028. It calls the convention the largest and longest-running hardwood industry gathering in North America and says it brings together sawmill owners, lumber buyers, manufacturers and suppliers. The programme includes education sessions, panels on global trade, policy and sustainability, an exhibit showcase and updates on NHLA grading rules and compliance. NHLA says the event is open to members and non-members, and that the official hotel for 2027 is Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort. IHLA Convention and Exposition. The Indiana Hardwood Lumbermen’s Association lists its 129th annual convention for 8 to 10 February 2027 at the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown. Its schedule shows a welcome reception on the Monday, an opening session, education sessions and an exhibit hall on the Tuesday, and exhibits until 1 p.m. on the Wednesday. Its convention page, updated 19 October 2026, said the 2027 exhibit hall was sold out and that exhibitors could join a waiting list. The page lists ticket types for members and non-members, so attendance is not limited to members.

AHMI Annual Meeting. Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers lists its 2027 annual meeting for 3 to 7 March at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort in Bonita Springs, Florida. The agenda is built around morning business sessions, producer and distributor division meetings and evening receptions. The page does not say whether non-members may attend, so ask AHMI before you plan around it.

Fairs in Europe

LIGNA runs 10 to 14 May 2027 in Hannover. The organiser’s after-show report for 2025 gives 78,000 visitors and 1,400 exhibitors, and describes it as a world summit for suppliers to the primary and secondary wood industries, with seven display categories. A lumber buyer is more likely to meet equipment and technology vendors here than lumber sellers.

interzum runs 11 to 14 May 2027 in Cologne. The organiser calls it the world’s leading trade fair for furniture production and interior design and says it takes place every two years. The American Hardwood Export Council’s events page lists a US hardwood pavilion at the 2027 show, to connect US hardwood companies with European buyers. LIGNA and interzum fall in the same week, so plan days for each rather than expecting to do both in full.

Carrefour International du Bois is the timber trade fair in Nantes. The organiser says the 2026 edition was held 2 to 4 June and the next runs 30 and 31 May and 1 June 2028, with stand sales starting in June 2027. AHEC’s calendar describes it as a wood-only fair held every two years.

International Hardwood Conference. The 11th edition took place on 5 and 6 November 2026 in Antwerp, organised by Fedustria with the European Organisation of the Sawmilling Industry and the European Timber Trade Federation, according to the Antwerp Convention Bureau. I did not find a date for the next edition.

Fairs for woodworking and furniture buyers

IWF West is a new woodworking show announced for 25 to 27 August 2027 in San Antonio, Texas. IWF Atlanta was held 25 to 28 August 2026 at the Georgia World Congress Center, and the organiser pages I read did not give the next Atlanta dates.

INDIAWOOD and KolkataWood. INDIAWOOD is scheduled for 3 to 6 March 2027 at India Expo Mart in Greater Noida, and KolkataWood for 10 to 12 September 2027 at Biswa Bangla Mela Prangan in Kolkata. AHEC’s events page lists open booth space for US companies at KolkataWood. These are shows for woodworking, furniture and mattress producers, which makes them a place to meet importing manufacturers in India.

How to use a visit

For a buyer, a trade event is a faster way to compare suppliers than a stack of email replies. A few habits make the days count:

Set meetings before you travel. Exhibit halls and association meetings are busy. Send each mill your spec, the species, grade, thickness in quarters, board feet and delivery place, ahead of time. Our specifications guide lists the lines.
Bring the same one-page spec to every table. Offers are only comparable when each supplier quotes the same lines, on the same tally basis.
Ask for what a sample must show. Our guide to samples for overseas buyers says what to request and how to check it.
Write down what was promised. Note grade rule, moisture range, lead time and who will send the quote, and get it in an email the same week.
Screen before you commit. A conversation at a booth is not a reference. Use the supplier red flags and how to choose a supplier before any deposit.

Not in this list

Events outside the sources I opened are not listed, and some shows will announce 2028 dates later. AHEC publishes a yearly events calendar that marks planned US hardwood pavilions; the page I read links the 2026 calendar and lists a few 2027 entries, and I did not find a full 2027 calendar. The list above also leaves out general building, kitchen and furniture fairs, which draw hardwood users but are not centred on lumber.

Which trade shows are best for buying hardwood lumber?

Lumber association conventions such as NHLA, IHLA and AHMI are where mills, yards and buyers of North American hardwood meet. Furniture and wood fairs such as interzum, LIGNA and Carrefour International du Bois draw buyers and suppliers of materials, machinery and components, so lumber is one part of a wider show.

When are interzum and LIGNA in 2027?

LIGNA runs 10 to 14 May 2027 in Hannover and interzum runs 11 to 14 May 2027 in Cologne, according to each organiser. Both fall in the same week, so a visitor has to choose or split the days.

Is there a hardwood lumber trade show in Europe in 2028?

The organiser of Carrefour International du Bois lists the next edition for 30 and 31 May and 1 June 2028 in Nantes, France, with stand sales starting in June 2027. I did not find 2028 dates for interzum or LIGNA on the pages I read, so check the organisers.
